Refrigerator Maintenance Tips

We take great pride in ensuring the satisfaction of each and every one of our customers. That is why we are happy to chat to you over the phone about your issue as well as bring you these handy tips and tricks.

Fill your fridge & freezer as full as possible

It may sound strange but a full fridge or freezer is actually more energy efficient than an empty one. This is because the cold contents stay colder when the door is open than empty space would. You can combat the empty space by filing them with bottles of water.

Keep the doors closed if the power goes out

Think of your fridge as a giant Esky. If the door seals are working as they should and the doors are kept closed, a fridge can maintain its coolness for hours after the power goes out. A freezer can last even longer (up to 2 days).

Set the right temperature

For maximum efficiency and food safety, the fridge should be set between 0°- 4°C and the freezer should be around -18°C. If your fridge doesn’t have a temperature display you can test the temperature by placing a small bowl of water in the fridge overnight. In the morning place a thermometer in the water and read off the temperature.

Vacuum the back of your fridge/freezer

A huge amount of dust, dirt and pet hairs tend to collect at the back of a fridge or freezer. Vacuuming this build-up off regularly will increase efficiency by allowing the condenser coils at the back to expel their heat more quickly therefore reducing operating costs.

Ensure door seals are sealing correctly

If your fridge or freezer seals are cracked, broken or incorrectly installed you may be cooling the entire kitchen without even knowing it! Check whether your seals are working correctly by opening and closing the door a small amount and feeling for a slight suction. If there is no suction, your seals may need replacing or re-fitting.

Cover your food before putting it into the fridge or freezer

The compressor is continuously working to remove moisture from the air inside your fridge and freezer. Covering your food before putting it in ensures less moisture escapes into the air therefore the compressor doesn’t have to work as hard to remove it.

Avoid putting hot food into the fridge or freezer

This one is simple, putting hot food in means your fridge or freezer will have to work extra hard to cool it down therefore increasing energy consumption. Where possible, try to allow food to cool before placingit in your fridge or freezer.

Just because your fridge is old, it doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced!

Many older fridges are made with high quality parts that have much more life left in them than you would think. Before you rush out and spend a fortune on a new fridge give us a call for a diagnosis, price and our honest recommendation.
